Ask The Coach: The Business Of DentistryCoach Kerry K. Straine is president and CEO of Straine Consulting, a practice management and consulting firm. E-mail your queries to editor@henryschein.com.Dear Coach: I love doing the dentistry that Ive been trained to do, but the frustration of running my practice is overriding my enthusiasm and competing with the energy that it takes to do the dentistry. The thought of being the practices leader, both clinically and administratively, is overwhelming to me. Help me identify what to do and how to do it. R.S. R.S., youre not alone. Although the average dentist spends four years in dental school and many years in practice mastering the intricate art of dentistry, the typical graduate has attended only one or two business-related courses to learn how to own and operate a successful dental practice. This lack of business education leaves many dentists vulnerable to estrangement from their staff and patients, erosion of their enthusiasm for dentistry, and ultimately economic loss. A dental practice owner has four roles. The first and most important is that of the clinical director who needs to clearly define the clinical standards of your practice. Think of it as creating your brand identity a philosophy that defines your practice, what you do, and how you do it. The second role requires you to define the clinical and administrative operating policies that you and your staff will follow to support your vision and provide a sense of purpose for your team. The five major operating policies consist of the new patient, periodontal therapy, financial, scheduling, and reactivation. After creating a set of written operating policies and integrating them into the job descriptions of each staff member, your next task is to develop a training program. Both you and your staff will benefit from training on a monthly basis because of the sense of community it creates in supporting your patients and practice. Finally, as the CEO of your practice, you must establish economic goals with quantifiable performance expectations linked to each of your five operating polices. Measure your expectations on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis and recognize the contribution made by each staff member. Its no wonder that your enthusiasm and energy have waned. Without the definition of why your practice exists, what you and your staff are supposed to do, and how to do it, you have put at risk your economic and emotional capital. You can achieve excellence, build a practice with integrity, and love practicing dentistry when you make the commitment to defining why your practice exists. Straine Consulting is at 838 University Ave., Sacramento, CA 95825. It can be reached by calling 1-800-568-7200 or visiting www.straine.com. |

Practice Management Solution: Dentrix Digital ImagingBy Brian PetersonBehavioral scientists have long informed us that as much as 75 percent of all human learning is visual. If patients cannot see the problem, they will be less inclined to accept the solution, according to Dr. David Gane in his recent article Imaging Solid State Digital Radiography. Fortunately, Dr. Gane said, the converse is also true patients who are effectively educated and understand their treatment needs are far more likely to accept the treatment you recommend. Have you ever seen a dentist who was explaining a procedure or recommending treatment use the patients paper chart to try and draw out an explanation in order to visually depict the story? The good news is that this type of dentist understands that most of us are taught best using visual means. The bad news is that they are not taking advantage of tools that could significantly increase case acceptance among their patients. The very best digital imaging tools on the market -- Dentrix Image, ViperSoft, ImageRay/ViperRay digital X-ray systems, and ImageCam/ViperCam intraoral camera systems -- enable a clinician to quickly and effectively educate a patient using images taken in real-time. Its like using a Polaroid instead of the traditional 35-mm camera. Instant gratification! Neither doctor nor patient has to wait to view x-rays. Instead, they are processed in three to four seconds. If the doctor notices a crack in the patients tooth, an intraoral camera can be used to immediately show this to the patient and educate them as to possible treatment. Dr. Gane points out several benefits associated with digital images Click here for complete feature. |
