1998-2000
CMP Media, Creative Director for TechWeb: The IT Network
For the
past year I have been responsible for building, managing and
directing a creative web team to maintain and improve TechWeb:
The IT Network.
TechWeb,
the network, is comprised of nine editorial websites which
cumulatively receives 1 million page impressions per day. Within
CMPnet, TechWeb is the predominant network contributing to
our status as being the 10th largest ad revenue generating site in
the world.
To maintain and continually improve the network and its nine individual sites I
spend most of my time recruiting and directing fulltime and
freelance web talent who can help keep our sites exciting
and useful for our users. This talent includes web designers, art
directors, html production people, javascript experts and
interns.
A typical day for me
requires juggling 5 or 6 projects that are at various stages
of development. In this context, the first way to maintain quality on
all projects is to have excellent people to work with. These people are
a key to our success and once I've established a
working relationship with them, secondly I need to create an environment in
which they can contribute their best and collectively our business can
grow.

CMP Media,Creative Director for Custom Online Publishing
In my previous role at CMP, for three
years I was responsible for directing the design and production of
custom websites. Custom websites are typically more sales
driven than editorially driven.
In this case I worked in a small development team of
six highly qualified and entrepreneurial thinking people, each of
which represented different yet necessary disciplines. We worked
closely with a Business Director and sales team to propose, sell and
launch numerous sites. Each site was specially designed to achieve
the business objectives of our
clients.
Our clients included: IBM, Gateway, Sun,
Compaq, Microsoft, Intel, Micron and more. In total we designed proposals for 42 web sites. Launched 25
sites. Won 6 awards. I was
responsible for design,
production, budgeting and some strategic planning.

School of
Visual Arts.
Professor of Computer
Illustration
For six
years, during the evenings, I taught Adobe Illustrator &
Photoshop to continuing education students.
I continually
kept up-to-date with the applications and learnt to communicate with
students in as many methods it took for them to understand how to
use the software to their advantage. At the time, most of the
students were recognizing that to stay viable in the job market they
needed to aquire skills with the new digital tools.
My focus
for this class was directed towards empowering these designers
with the fundamental and specific knowledge they needed to be able
to use the new tools for both getting immediate work in the
marketplace and/or transferring their pure creativity to this
digital environment.

CMP Media,
Art
Director for InformationWeek
Online When Mosaic was first released InformationWeek
not only covered the story but a couple of us immediately saw the
fundamental potential that the "Browser" had for
transforming the publishing business as well as all other
industries.
A small team of us forged the way by launching
InformationWeek Online. We also helped other CMP magazines to launch
their brands online.
After launch, I was responsible for the
design and production of the web site as well as sales tools to help enable our
sales force to develop a new revenue stream from our
advertisers.

1989-'94
CMP
Media, Associate Art
Director
for InformationWeek
Magazine
I
began my five year run with InformationWeek, the print magazine, as
their Assistant Art Director. In that role I learnt about the design
and production issues involved in pushing a weekly news magazine out
the door each week. My major contribution was in creating computer
generated charts & illustrations as well as leading the effort
to move design & production work into a desktop publishing
environment using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Quark
Xpress.
I eventually became their Associate Art Director
where my responsibilities included design and art direction for news
stories, feature stories, special issues and covers. Daily
I collaborated with editors to determine possible
illustrations, photoshoots and layout ideas. I then commissioned
illustrators and photographers, designed the page
layouts and made sure the pages reached the printing plant and
printed with the best quality possible.
In addition I
worked as the liason to "Roger Black's" design firm during
redesigns.

My first real job outside of Art School was
working with the Museum of Modern Art. During the four years I spent
at MoMA I wore many hats, from organizing group visits for schools
to managing building projects.
Towards the end of my four years I managed a
staff of 23 porters and a $1 million budget. Our
responsibilities included daily museum cleanings, demolition of exhibit areas and moving offices
when needed.
